Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro)

SR-710 Community Conversations

The SR-710 Community Conversations project goal was to involve residents, businesses, and key stakeholders of the north corridor region of Los Angeles, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Glendale, El Sereno, Alhambra, and San Gabriel in a series of discussions. These discussions centered on grave traffic concerns and congestion that currently exist along the north I-710 freeway. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Caltrans needed to gather large-scale community input on possible solutions that would reflect the needs of the community and address their issues and concerns through direct dialogue. DSO hosted 20 public meetings to begin a dialogue with the community, educate them about proposed plans, listen to issues as the community saw them, and gather information through the scoping process to be used in a draft environmental impact statement. In addition, the community outreach process helped educate the public on the legal process required both by CEQA and NEPA in preparing a draft environmental impact report.

Services

DSO assisted Metro by doing community outreach in the various communities affected by traffic congestion of the north I-710 freeway.

As a team member of community outreach, DSO provided the following services:

DSO—interacted with the elected officials’ staff about community engagement to invite them to attend the local area meetings regarding the 710 Gap Closure.

DSO—developed a recommended target list of important key stakeholders to invite and get them engaged in this process.

DSO—produced Spanish translations of collateral materials, and provided oral translation at community meetings.

DSO—invited El Sereno business owners to attend community meetings via a door-to-door campaign. In addition, DSO did a targeted drop-off of flyers to community organizations in South Pasadena and El Sereno, inviting them to attend the various meetings the MTA was hosting. The organizations included schools, churches, civic groups, chambers, school districts, and nonprofits.

DSO— assisted in strategic outreach planning with MTA and team consultants to get stakeholders involved in this important environmental study.
